Golf Day 2016 - A little wetter than wanted

Well, what a difference a year makes! Last year’s sunshine and pink faces turned unceremoniously into stair-rod rain and a rather “washed out” look on people’s faces.

Of course, it wasn’t all bad. In fact the first 90 minutes of play was conducted under much fairer skies. However the clouds soon gathered, the breeze picked up enough to position the giant rain cloud over Greetham Valley, then dropped right away leaving the rain to heave down for the next couple of hours.

The ladies team being among the first teams to arrive at the Halfway House after the downpour had started each and every one of them suitably attired in weather-proof clothing, absolutely undeterred and in fact rather determined to carry on. It was not such a pretty picture for some of the other teams. Waterproof clothing was minimal and in some cases completely non-existent and the persistence of the rain unfortunately led to a few teams throwing in a very soggy towel before completing their rounds.

Overall, half the amount of teams that started actually completed a full round of golf, a commendable feat in itself considering the challenging conditions.

The wonderful evening meal was thankfully enjoyed in the much drier surroundings of the Rutland Suite where the representative from this year’s chosen charity – Cancer Research UK – was overwhelmed to receive a donation which totalled just shy of £2,800. Over £1000 of which was donated by players on the day. An additional, and very generous, £250 was then pledged the next day by Plasto-Sac taking the total amount raised to over £3,000.
Huge thanks for all the very kind donations and especially to our sponsors for your continued support;
Caps Case, DR Wakefield, Pallet Network Anglia, Floryn Packaging, Saffron Insurance, MHA MacIntyre Hudson, RGS Labels, Maxilla Packaging, HSBC Bank, Plasto-Sac, Lotus Bakeries, InterAmerican Coffee, Complete Coffee and Quest Employment.

The moment everyone had been waiting for soon arrived, Les’ (borderline) jokes…..swiftly followed by the prize giving, as always overseen by our Master of Ceremonies Dennis (Big Mac) MacNamara. Prizes this year were calculated using only the scores from those teams who completed 18 holes.
For the men, it was a sterling effort and a great win for Andy McClatchey of Cafeology. In 2nd place Edward Whitehead of Plasto-Sac and in 3rd rookie Daniel Versey of Marco Beverage Systems.
And for the ladies; taking first place and continuing her good form at the Masteroast Golf Day, Julie Lightowler of Select Coffee Services. In 2nd place Penny Gilbert of Pallet Network Anglia, and in 3rd place Eve Mills of Masteroast Coffee.
The team prize went to Team 8 with a finishing score of 89. Congratulations to Cafeology’s Andy McClatchey, Graham Duncan of GRD Consultancy, Marc Barnes of Timeline Wealth Management and Daniel Versey of Marco Beverage Systems.
The Nearest the Pin competition was won by Martin Trendall of Trendall’s Butchers and the Longest Drive was hit by Ben Cooper of Hallmark Vending.

This year, due to the adverse conditions, birdie prizes were given to those who managed two birdies. Congratulations to Richard Lightowler of Select Coffee Services, Phelam Curr of Morvend and Stuart Manning of MHA MacIntyre Hudson

The night then continued at the bar and around the pool table with pictures of flooded greens being shared and many fingers being crossed that we return to the sunshine and pink faces next year.
