How Masteroast came to be

At Masteroast, we like to think of ourselves as the original “artisan roaster”.
Way back in 1981, our founders Les and Eve Mills, following diverse careers trading sugar, coffee and in exporting earth moving equipment and electronics, decided to set up Ecobev Ltd. a coffee and tea marketing business.

By 1983, circumstances suggested an in-house coffee roasting operation should be the way forward and in consequence two very geriatric, pre-war built Whitmee coffee roasting machines were installed in a rented building that was little more than a shed in the village of Newport in North Essex. In these most humble surroundings Masteroast Coffee Company Ltd was born.

After some interesting and varying degrees of success, the need for larger and rather more acceptable premises became overwhelmingly apparent and in 1986 the decision was made to purchase a 3,100 square foot industrial building in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. A “new”, little over thirty years old, second hand 30kg Barth roaster was acquired and installed alongside the two faithful old Whitmees.

Consistent Growth

Within three years this building was part exchanged for a unit twice the size, on the same industrial estate. At the same time, the huge step was made to purchase and install a custom-built 60kg coffee roaster from Lilla of São Paulo, Brazil. While the Barth roaster was retained, reluctantly the Whitmees had to be sold.

The next couple of decades saw the purchase of two equally sized adjoining buildings and the installation of the second 120kg Lilla machine.
2010 saw Masteroast’s final move to the other side of Peterborough to our present Fengate home. With further extensions and the acquisition of adjoining land and building, we presently occupy premises of approximately 40,000 square feet on three acres of land.

A Roast For Everyone.

In order to offer the broadest spectrum of roasting profiles, alongside the larger capacity Lilla, we have two state-of-the-art, semi-continuous production Neo-tech roasters plus a small-batch 5kg Neo-tech for product development in addition, several micro-batch roasters of various capacities.

With 20+ packing lines producing every format of sachets, bags, bag-in-bags,
vac-packs, capsules, hand packing and so much more, a totally bespoke service delivering individual batch roasting and blending to order, we still take pride in considering ourselves the ultimate “artisan” roaster, the only difference now is that we are doing it for over 1,000 customers!

Fulfilment & Distribution Centre

To keep up with the needs of our customers, in 2021 Masteroast completed the construction of a new 2,500 pallet capacity fulfilment and distribution centre on our site to service the foodservice, ecommerce and retail industry.

As one of the largest UK coffee importers and roasters, we are behind many well known coffee brands and this new fully operational facility, operated by our subsidiary company Isurus Fulfilment Ltd., is a natural extension to our Group of Companies enabling us to move with the times and demand from customers - as well as providing us with room to grow.
